The ugliest fruit you’ll ever eat

Don’t be fooled by the wrinkly, green and orange exterior of the ugli fruit – the bumpy skin peels easily away and the fruit inside is juicy and sweet. Discovered growing wild in Jamaica over 80 years ago, it’s believed to be a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit.

Ugli fruits are about the size of a grapefruit and are high in vitamin C. They can be sliced in half and eaten like a grapefruit, or simply peeled and eaten in sections like a tangerine or clementine. The ugli fruit’s sweet juice makes a refreshing drink; the juice is also delicious in dressings or marinades.

Ugli fruit is in season from December through April; the later in the season, the sweeter the fruit. When picking your ugli fruit, choose one that is heavy for its size and gives slightly to pressure from your palm, similar to a grapefruit.
